A local mayor in Mexico married an alligator 'bride' on Tuesday, as part of a traditional ceremony to bring good fortune to the fishing community of San Pedro Huamelula.

Dressed in the traditional white, the alligator was first baptized before Mayor Joel Vazquez Rojas said his vows at the village's local church.

Fishermen believe the crocodile is a princess and that the wedding ritual will bring plenty of fish, shrimp and other seafood for them to catch along the Pacific coast.

Following the marriage ceremony, the crocodile is referred to as the "wife" of the mayor.
