Despite budget cuts scheduled for 2016 and possibly the following two years, investment in science and technology will be maintained, said President Enrique Peña Nieto and the head of the Finance and Public Credit Secretariat (SHCP) Luis Videgaray.
Joined by the secretaries of education, communication and transportation, energy and the environment, as well as the National Autonomous University (UNAM) rector and National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) director, Videgaray said that investment in science and technology increased from 0.43 percent of the national gross domestic product (GDP) in 2012 to 0.56 percent in 2015.
A country that invests in science and technology is a country that believes in productivity and competitiveness, creating well-paying jobs and building human capital, Videgaray said.
During the award ceremony for the Mexican Academy of Sciences Research Award, Peña Nieto said that the science, technology and innovation program has been fruitful and validated the intention to spend 1 percent of the GDP on science and technology.
...The total amount of the GDP invested in science and technology increased by 30 percent from 2012 to 2015, the president said.
