The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans to make it easier for companies to use drone aircraft, reported Reuters, something that has been strictly regulated up to now.
Commercial drone aircraft use has been highly regulated by the FAA and generally banned in the U.S, except in certain cases where the ban has been lifted. However, out of 750 requests that the agency received to turn the ban, it only approved 48 of them.
Despite the large roadblock put in place for the use of commercial drones with the country, the U.S. Border Patrol has been routinely flying the automated machines along the U.S.- Mexico border for at least a decade, while they have for years been used in military operations overseas.
A large number of companies have been pushing for federal regulators to remove barriers to commercial use of drones, including Chevron, Berkshire Hathaway's BNSF Railway Co, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co, companies working in agricultural surveys and mapping as well as a number of film and media companies, according to Reuters.
