As thousands of Mexicans living in the United States head to Mexico for the holidays, that nation’s government is using its Paisano Program to get the word out to them about their rights and responsibilities as travelers south of the border, among them a new law requiring car insurance for many vehicles.

Under the law that took effect in September, drivers venturing into Mexico with newer-model vehicles must carry a minimum of $50,000 in coverage for property damage and $100,000 in coverage for injuries.

...Launched in 1989 by the Mexican government, the Paisano Program provides Mexicans living abroad with a variety of services and assistance to ensure them safe and smooth travel during their seasonal visits to their native country.

As the program began gearing up in November for the return of Mexicans for the holidays, another new regulation takes effect, this one increasing from $300 to $500 the limit on the value of new goods that visitors can bring into the country without being taxed.

...The Paisano Program’s website has a link labeled “traza tu ruta,” or “trace your route,” that can be used by visitors to estimate their travel times, look for rest stops and other services along their travel routes, and to look up the fees charged on any toll roads.

The program also has two toll-free numbers that travelers can call:  01-800-201-8542 for calls made from Mexico, and 1-877-210-9469 for calls made from the United States.
