MEXICO CITY – The president of Mexico’s Senate slammed what he described as a meager rise in the minimum wage for 2015, saying the 4.2 percent increase to 71.10 pesos ($4.85) a day is insufficient to meet workers’ needs.

The senator of the center-left Party of the Democratic Revolution, PRD, Miguel Barbosa, stressed the need to urgently review wage policy and analyze the measures needed to create better jobs with higher salaries, the Senate said in a statement Saturday.

He said the executive branch has not understood the vital importance of raising salaries and reversing a three-decade decline in real wages.

The National Minimum Wage Commission, or CNSM, on Friday announced an increase that will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2015, and is equivalent to just 2.81 pesos (some $0.19) per day.
