Animal rights activists had stepped up their campaign over the last 2 years to urge authorities to move a polar bear in Mexico to another country with a more appropriate environment for an animal from the Arctic. (AlJazeera)

Yupi has lived in the Morelia Zoo for just over 20 years after being brought from Alaska as a three-month-old cub that had lost its mother to a hunter. But in the past couple of years there has been growing international alarm over the conditions in which Yupi lives.

The furor caught the attention of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England, which was already in the process of creating a four-hectare polar bear reserve with features that attempt to duplicate the Arctic tundra.

In March, animal welfare experts were set to fly to Mexico to finalize plans to move the bear to the Yorkshire park, but they scotched the trip for security concerns. Violence and crime, standard fare in Michoacán at the time, put them off.

The zoo, however, has said the bear is fine where it is and has rejected calls to release it.

And so Yupi remains confined to concrete quarters with limited space and a tepid little pool in which to wallow and try to escape the heat. Not much of a life for a polar bear.
