SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO SONORA - Héctor Sánchez de la Vega, director of Subzone Hospital No. 12 of the Mexican Social Security Institute, said that at least 30% of the patients hospitalized in the medical facilities of that institution suffer from "Delirium Tremens" and this comes fundamentally from addictions to alcohol and drugs.
He said that those who present with these symptoms are older adults, 25% of the patients are those who have a serious problem.
He explained that it is common for people who smoke and drink alcohol, as well as those who suffer from diabetes and arterial hypertension, which is not strictly controlled, and these are the patients most likely to suffer from delirium due to a lack of oxygen to the brain.
This mental illness is characterized by changes in awareness, accompanied by confusion, disorientation, changes to the attention span and loss of memory. When a patient suffers from delirium, they have a higher risk for aggressive and destructive conduct.
